From Alex Albu, leader of Union Borotba (Struggle) in Odessa and deputy of the regional council:
Today in Odessa a so-called ‘peaceful’ march of football fans turned into street battles. Far-right football fans gathered at about 16:00 in the Cathedral Square. From the very beginning, there were organized groups of people well-equipped with shields, bats, helmets and masks. The crowd shouted nationalist slogans.
Then, when the column of ultra-nationalists tried to move on Greek street in the city center, detachments of anti-fascist defenders of Odessa blocked their way.
Nationalists attacked the defenders of Odessa, using stun grenades. They also pulled out of the paving blocks and threw them at their opponents – the anti-fascists.
Basically, they were neo-Nazi militants. Many were well-equipped men 35-40 years. They were clearly preparing for the confrontation, and came to Odessa to carry out their nationalist “orders.”
Odessa fans who wanted to take part in a peaceful march left the procession when they realized that there was going to be a fight. This clearly shows that it is not a spontaneous action of football fans, but a well-planned and organized action by the Right Sector and other neo-Nazi gangs aimed at intimidating the population of Odessa.
Odessa is not the place to neo-Nazi militants, added Albu.
Currently fighting in the streets of Odessa continues.
